As we pray this week, we are participating in the Story of God by praying for justice in our state

Scriptures

Psalm 72:1: Endow the king with your justice, O God,

    the royal son with your righteousness.

May he judge your people in righteousness,

    your afflicted ones with justice.

Proverbs 24:23-25: To show partiality in judging is not good:

Whoever says to the guilty, “You are innocent,”

    will be cursed by peoples and denounced by nations.

But it will go well with those who convict the guilty,

    and rich blessing will come on them.

IT'S NOT FAIR!

If you've spent any amount of time with kids you've probably heard that phrase, usually in a whiny, complaining voice. Kids want things to be just and fair. 

Justice is an attribute of God, part of who he is. 

This should make justice very important to us.

Psalm 72:1 is a prayer on behalf of the king that God would give him righteousness so that he can judge his people righteously and with justice. Our verses in Proverbs remind us that showing partiality isn't good. The guilty must be convicted and a rich blessing will be the result. This should be part of how we intercede in prayer for our state. Justice pleases God and he will bless those who seek justice.

As we continue to pray for California, we should be praying for justice. This isn't just referring to legal matters but to us personally. Do we treat everyone fairly? Are we impartial? Do we seek to make things right when others have been wronged? Let's look for ways we can shine the light of God's justice on those around us.

Lord,

You are a God of justice. Help us to stand up for what is right and true and to stand against what displeases You. Help us to discern true justice and seek it for all.
